Wholesome Comfort Giveaway

Wholesome Comfort Giveaway

Meatloaf is my comfort food.  In fact, I am somewhat of a meatloaf connoisseur. You can keep your gourmet meatloaf.  What I love is a great big slice of homestyle meatloaf and a heaping mountain of mashed potatoes.  Gravy?  Yes please!

Wholesome Comfort Giveaway

You can imagine my culinary enthusiasm when I found a meatloaf recipe in Wholesome Comfort, the just-released e-cookbook by Kate of Modern Alternative Mama.  There is meatloaf, and then there is Meatloaf! Kate’s meatloaf recipe is Meatloaf! It’s a taste of home on a plate, a visit back to Grandma’s farm kitchen, comfort food at its finest.

Wholesome Comfort: Whole Foods to Warm & Nourish Your Family is all about comfort food.  Don’t let the word “wholesome” scare you off. These dishes are delicious and nutritious.  They contain whole foods that you will recognize, no chemically laden pseudo-foods, and no ingredients you would have to order from Timbuktu.

Most people who are attempting to transition to a less processed diet fear they must resign themselves to a life without their favorite comfort foods.  Wholesome Comfort totally debunks that fear…totally.

Want chicken and dumplings?  There’s a recipe for that.  Apple spice cake? It’s in there.  Turkey dinner with all the trimmings?  You got it!  Chicken pot pie, macaroni and cheese, chocolate peanut butter fudge?  It’s all in there!  And have I mentioned the meatloaf!?

Check out the table of contents here.

Looks good, doesn’t it?  After trying several recipes (and the meatloaf three times), I can assure you, it is good.  Try it for yourself with a free, easy scalloped potatoes recipe.

TSHM disclosure statement: I was given a free copy of this book to review. If you buy a copy through this link, I am compensated. But you know what? That doesn’t affect my review. You can trust me. I wouldn’t lie to you, especially about meatloaf. I only review products that I at least somewhat like…and if I only somewhat like it, I would say I only somewhat liked it. For example, while I loved the apple cinnamon spice cake, the gingerbread was too strong with my blackstrap molasses in it, so I only somewhat liked it…although my kiddos really liked it. See how honest I am. But the meatloaf! Yum!

    1. Good for you, Sara! I’ve got a biscuit recipe on my site (it uses white flour, but you can sub–I do sometimes) if you want to try it for starters. Biscuits are easy as pie–easier actually.

    1. I now have three I switch between. The first is just for nostalgia, since it’s the one I grew up with, but lately I’ve been stuck on this new meatloaf recipe. It really is tasty…in my opinion. 🙂

  1. Oooohhhh! All the recipies look yummy! I think I would have to go with the crockpot chicken and rice or the chicken pot pie or the cinnamon pie treats, too many yummies to choose from! I a big chicken lover so the chicken pot pie sounds like the one I would try first, right before the meatloaf. Bacon cheeseburger meatloaf….yyuuuuummmm! Any meatloaf..yummmmmm! 🙂

    1. Ha ha! I love an enthusiastic eater! 🙂 Chicken pot pie is one of my favorite dishes, too. I haven’t tried this recipe yet, but you’ve inspired me. 🙂 Miss you guys!!!

  2. Hmmm it’s just so hard to choose just one comfort food from the table of contents!!!! But soups are definitively one of my favorite comfort foods…..I would have to go with the Ham and bean soup or the French Onion soup. Or Even maybe the Shepherds Pie.

  3. Mmm, Broccoli cheddar soup and pumpkin bread! Two favorite comfort foods! Also would love to try marinated lamb; I have never made it before and am looking for new varieties of real food recipes. Sounds delicious!

    1. The broccoli cheddar soup was a huge hit here. I have yet to try the lamb, but you got my mouth watering just talking about it!

We’ve been on the real food journey for a while now, and, to be honest, the food tastes better! 🙂

  4. Since I have to cook for multiple food allergies, I sincerely appreciate new (safe) meals to add to our boring rotation…
The meals that caught my attention included the Crockpot Chicken & Rice and Marinated Lamb. It would be a delight to serve 1 meal to the ENTIRE family (and not spend the entire night in the kitchen)!

    1. I understand COMPLETELY! When we were first faced with elimination diets, allergies, and then Crohn’s, we all ate the same way, but eventually we had to add foods back in for some of us and not for all. Currently we have one person off dairy, one off wheat, and one off acidic foods. Good grief! It is nice to find one thing for everyone! It almost makes a person want to serve the same “safe” dish every night!

If your daughter has grain issues, the Against the Grain book from the same site is good. You can access it through the same links above. We have used that one quite a bit when one daughter was on limited grains.

I hope your little one heals and finds food she enjoys!

      1. Thank you for responding… While I hate that you’ve had to cook multiple meals for your family as well, it DOES really help to know that someone understands. I keep thinking I am such a “Slacker Mom” for not getting this meal planning thing down, but it really is a challenge with all the special needs.
And I appreciate the other cookbook suggestion… I’ve been eyeing that book for awhile now as my issues seem to get considerably worse with grains.

        1. I mostly have found that I can cook the same meal with different sides or variations along the way. For example, I’m off dairy right now for the nursing baby. If a soup or sauce calls for cream, I will remove my portion first and then add the cream. Sometimes we will make two similar dishes which require the same basic work. When my daughter was off shellfish, I would make clam chowder and potato chowder in the same night.

My whole family follows many of the dietary restrictions that the others are put on, just to make it easier. When my daughter couldn’t have any grains, we all went off grains, with the occasional rice added as a side to a meal. (She doesn’t like rice, so didn’t mind passing it up.) They were all great sports about it, and giving up processed foods has been a blessing to all of them.

Having mandatory dietary restrictions definitely saps some of the joy and “simple” out of life, I agree! I can’t stop thinking about chips for some reason, and we rarely had them before! 😉 But we still try to make eating and cooking as simple, pleasurable, and nourishing as possible. I really hope it gets easier for you!
